This computer room is named in memory of Bob Newburg, who passed away in 2005 after a valiant battle against cancer. He was the beloved husband of Weston United’s Chief Executive Officer, Jean Newburg. Bob’s love of life shone from his face and made all who met him like him. His many friends, colleagues and family members have contributed to establish this computer room as a legacy to help and support the consumers of Weston United. JP Morgan Chase Foundation generously granted $10,000 to establish this rooom. This room was dedicated on March 20, 2006, on what would have been Bob’s 57th birthday.
Computers changed Bob’s life. He had not had positive experiences with school, and was skeptical when he enrolled in a computer course. Taking the computer class was the turning point for Bob. He discovered that he enjoyed and understood computers, and in fact, had a natural ability for the subject. Bob began work in the computer field as a programmer, and rose quickly in the business. He was able to call upon his appealing personality and outgoing nature, and also use his people skills to become a respected manager. Bob moved into banking, and as banks began to merge he became the key individual able to coordinate the efforts of strangers to work together to implement new computer systems. Building on his innate strengths, with training and support, Bob enjoyed a satisfying and rewarding career in the computer field.
We, at Weston United, hope that Bob Newburg’s life will be a legacy for others. He grew up poor, but always wanted more. Bob began working at the age of 6 delivering vegetables from a grocer’s cart in the streets of Long Island City, Queens, and planting flowers for visitors in a nearby cemetery. He rose to the challenges of his jobs, waking up at 4:30 in the morning and commuting long distances when required, always appropriately dressed for work.
Bob was always a gentleman and treated others with respect and kindness. He loved to laugh and enjoy himself, and others were drawn to his magnetic personality. Weston United was Bob’s favorite charity. He loved Weston United’s consumers, and supported them with donations and encouragement from the first day in 1985 until the celebration of the organization’s 20th anniversary, shortly before he died.
